Moving a pet to a different room used to mean opening the booking, picking the room from a list and hoping you'd remembered who else was in it that week. Now you can do it on the calendar: pick the booking up, drop it on another room, done. It's been one of the most requested changes for a long time, and it's live for every KennelBooker account today.
How it works
- Open the calendar and find the booking you want to move.
- Click and hold the booking's coloured bar, then start dragging it.
- Rooms that are free for the whole stay turn green. Everything else fades out.
- Drop the booking on a green room.
- Check the confirmation, which names the pets and the room you're moving them to, and click OK.
The calendar refreshes with the booking in its new room. The dates don't change, only the room.
If a booking has more than one pet in the same room, they all move together. If the pets on a booking are spread across two rooms, only the pets in the room you dragged from move.
You can only drop it where it fits
The hard part of moving bookings around isn't the moving. It's knowing the new room is actually free, not just today but for every night of the stay. That's the part the calendar now does for you.
When you pick a booking up, KennelBooker checks every room against the same availability rules it uses when you make a booking. That includes:
- Whether the room is free for the whole stay, including any part of it that runs into next month.
- Whether the room takes that type of pet.
- How you charge (per night, per day or per 24 hours), which changes when a room counts as free on a changeover day.
- Your Only book when completely free setting, if you don't allow one booking to check out on the same day another checks in.
- For daycare, full days and half days, including AM and PM sessions sharing a room.
Rooms that pass are the green ones. You can't drop a booking anywhere else, so there's no way to double-book a room by accident.
Same-day changeovers are checked too
A room can be free on paper and still be a problem on the day. If one dog is being picked up at 3pm and you've put another dog in the same room with a 10am drop-off, you've got a clash.
So when another booking is checking in or out of a room on the same day as the booking you're moving, KennelBooker compares the drop-off and pickup times. If they overlap, the room shows in red and won't take the drop. Drag over it to see exactly why, for example:
Times overlap on Tue 10 Nov: Max is in this room until 15:00, and this booking would be there from 09:00.
This only works when the times are on the bookings. If a booking hasn't got a drop-off or pickup time, there's nothing to compare, so the move is allowed. It's worth getting those times filled in for busy changeover days.
If you've switched on Blockout entire day if a daycare booking is checked in in your boarding settings, the calendar respects that as well. A boarding booking can't be moved into a room if it would check in on a day a daycare dog is in that room.
Every move is recorded
Each move adds an entry to the booking's history. It says who moved it, which room it came from and went to, the dates, and why the move was allowed: the room rules that were switched on at the time, and any same-day changeover that was checked.
That's useful when a busy morning leaves everyone wondering who moved Bella, and it gives you a clear record if a customer ever questions why their pet was in a particular room.
Clicking a booking is faster too
While we were in there, we rebuilt the popup that opens when you click a booking on the calendar. It used to reload the whole calendar before it appeared. Now it opens straight away, with the booking's details, its pets and their rooms.
You can still change a pet's room from the popup. Click the Load Available button and pick a new room from the list. Rooms that clash on a same-day changeover are shown greyed out with the reason, so you know why they're not available. This is also the way to move a booking if you're on a tablet.
What can be moved
| Booking | Drag and drop | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Boarding | Yes | Provisional bookings need confirming first. |
| Board and train | Yes | Moves between your board and train rooms. |
| Daycare | Yes, if daycare uses your rooms | Turn on Use units instead of playareas in your daycare settings. |
| Split bookings | No | Use Move Split Booking on the booking. |
| Nightcare | No | Change the room on the booking. |
| Checked out or cancelled | No | These are left as they were. |
Tip: if you only see grey rooms when you pick a booking up, nothing else is free for the whole stay. Check whether a shorter stay in one room and a move partway through would work instead, using a split booking.
Try it now
There's nothing to switch on. Open your calendar, pick up a booking and drag it. If you'd like a hand, or something isn't behaving the way you'd expect, get in touch through the chat in your account.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change a booking's dates by dragging it?
No. Dragging only changes the room, and the dates stay exactly as they were. To change dates, open the booking and edit them there.
Can I drag split bookings?
Not yet. A split booking has a pet in more than one room during the stay, so it still moves from the split screen on the booking. Click it on the calendar and use the Move Split Booking button.
Does drag and drop work on an iPad or phone?
Dragging needs a mouse or trackpad. On a tablet or phone, tap the booking instead and change the room from the popup. It runs the same checks.
What if I move a booking to the wrong room?
Drag it back, or change the room from the popup. Both moves are saved to the booking's history, so you can always see where a pet was and who moved it.
